15 Simple Screen-Free Activities Your Preschooler Will Love

15 Simple Screen-Free Activities Your Preschooler Will Love

If you’ve ever felt like screens are taking over your day, you’re absolutely not alone. 🙈

Especially during the summer, it’s so easy to rely on screens when it’s hot, you’re tired, the kids are constantly saying “I’m bored”, and you’re trying to accomplish a million things simultaneously.

But, I think I can make you feel better:

You don’t have to over-do screen time to get some calm time.

You don’t need complicated activities.

You don’t need Pinterest-perfect setups to keep your kids engaged.

Young kids THRIVE on simple, hands-on play and that’s exactly what always works.

So, I’m sharing 15 easy screen-free activities you can start using today that your kids will really enjoy.

Do you already do any of them?

Easy Outdoor Ideas

1. Nature Color Hunt
Call out a color and have your child find something outside that matches.

2. Bug Watching
Look for ants, butterflies, or beetles and observe what they’re doing.

3. Sidewalk Chalk Drawing
Draw pictures, shapes, letters, or simple games like hopscotch.

4. Water Play Station
Set out cups, bowls, and spoons for pouring and scooping (or my kids love to make “flower soup” by adding in dirt and flower petals!).

5. Backyard Scavenger Hunt
Create a simple list: something green, something soft, something round. Or this yard hunt is done for you!

Easy Indoor Activities

6. Build a Blanket Fort
Let your child create their own cozy space to play or read or snack.

7. Playdough Creations
Make letters, shapes, or scenes of places they love…anything they love or imagine!

8. Sensory Bin Play
Use rice, beans, pom poms, or water with small scoops and toys to create a sensory bin. Add some letter or number cards to a dry sensory bin to add a sneaky learning element to it!

9. Story Basket Play
Act out a favorite book using toys or props. It’s perfect for story comprehension and language development!

10. Invitation to Play Tray
Set out a few themed items on a tray and let them explore freely. Open ended learning at it’s finest!

I love setting out small items, playdough, and some “tools” and seeing what they do with it.

Everyday Learning Moments

11. Help in the Kitchen
Stirring, pouring, and washing veggies all count as learning.

12. Sorting Laundry
Match socks or sort clothes by color, who they belong to, or size!

13. Puzzle Time
Simple puzzles build problem-solving skills and look SO pretty when they’re complete.

14. Building with Blocks
Encourage fine motor skills by stacking, balancing, and creating something unique.

15. Drawing or Coloring Time
Even simple scribbling builds important skills, like pincer grasp, hand control, and creativity!

Why Do Screen-Free Activities Matter?

Research shows that too much screen time for young children can affect attention, sleep, and behavior. Which I think we can all agree is NOT ideal.

BUT, simple hands-on play helps build a whole bunch of necessary skills, like:

  • Focus and attention

  • Creativity

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Fine motor development

  • Language skills

  • Self-control

And the best part?

They really don’t require a lot of time, money, or energy from you. They’re lots of play with a little learning snuck in there too. 🙌🏻

Because you don’t need more pressure or prep…you just need a few simple ideas that actually work and your little kids can do mostly on their own.

Cheering you on!
