7 Books About School for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Happy back to school season, y’all! This time of year is when all the little ones get to see their older siblings or friends go off to school. So, to help your little one learn a bit about school and what it will be like, here are my current favorite school picture books for toddlers and preschoolers! Just click the specific title or matching picture to check out the book!

Also…SPOILER ALERT: I’ll give a quick synopsis of what each book is about. So just so I don’t spoil any part of the stories for you, you’ve been fairly warned. Haha! :)

1. I’m Going to Preschool
Whether your little one is going off to preschool super soon or not for a few years, this adorable book shows little ones some of the things they’ll see when they go off to preschool! The book goes through things they’ll see, people they’ll meet, and some of the fun things there are to do when they go off to school.

2. Time for School, Mouse!

This cute book follows one of the cutest, classic characters, Mouse, through a morning of trying to get ready for school. He has all his school supplies, like his lunchbox and backpack, but can’t find his homework anywhere. Join in the fun as Mouse searches through school supplies and things around the house until he finally finds his homework and hops on the school bus!

3. Maisy Goes to Preschool

In this little book, your learner will follow Maisy through a day at preschool! This book describes and shows activities, supplies, and people that kiddos usually see when they go off to school for the first time. The simple illustrations are super colorful and fun to use as a “find it” activity as you read with your little one.

4. ABCs of Kindness

This book about kindness is the perfect way to talk about being a kind friend while incorporating letter recognition into each page! There is a kindness-related word for every letter and really sweet, simple illustrations that lend themselves to great conversations with your kiddos. Read this book together while asking questions like, “What do you see the kids doing here?” and “How are these kids feeling?” or “What is going on in this picture?” Your little ones are sure to be talking about all the love and kindness they see in every drawing…WHILE they soak in some extra exposure to letters. :) It’s a win win!

5. My Fun School Bus

This book is super fun for little learners! It’s packed with a BUNCH of flaps to practice learning a whole bunch of skills! There are pages and flaps for learning opposites, shapes, colors, letters, beginning sounds, numbers, and counting! My little guy loves playing with this book and all it’s fun flaps.

6. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Oh, the classic Chicka Chick Boom Boom! This is a super fun book that ties the end of summer with it’s fun coconut trees and warm weather to letters we learn about as we start school again! All the little letter decide to start climbing up the coconut tree until it becomes so heavy that it crashes down. All the mom and dad letters run to the rescue, but the little letters are pretty banged up. The repetition in this book is a great way to get young kiddos to start reading along with you. My little guy loves to say the repeating parts of the book like “Chicka chicka boom boom!” when I get to that part and pause. It’s a perfect way to involve them in the reading time. Y’all can also practice identifying letters AND colors as you read this fun, rhythmic story together.

7. Llama Llama Misses Mama

This book is is all about everyone’s favorite little llama as he goes off to school for the first time! Rhyming the whole way through, this story tells about how Little Llama gets ready for school, gets there, and starts to feel shy and sad that his mama can’t stay with him. He meets his teacher, lots of new kids, and sees new things to play and learn with, but he’s still feeling a bit too shy to participate. As the book goes on, the day doesn’t get better and Llama starts to really miss Mama. Then, he realizes that Mama will come back soon and he can play and have fun until she does. He ends up enjoying playing games with his new friends and is SO excited when Mama comes back! Such a sweet one that will make all the mamas feel all the things. Haha!

BONUS BOOK RECOMMENDATION!

The 12 Days of Preschool

This book is SUCH a cute addition to our preschool learning times together! It goes through a new thing that the preschool kids learn how to share each of 12 days. The flow of the book goes along with the song “The 12 Days of Christmas”, so it has great rhythm and is easy for kids to remember. My son LOVES this book and can read bits and pieces of it by himself at this point! Haha!

These book companion activities go along perfectly with the story and get little ones practicing a HUGE variety of skills, like coloring, retelling the story, cutting and gluing, identifying letters and numbers, naming colors, matching pictures, and counting. CLICK HERE to peek at all the activities included!

There you have it, friends! I hope these stories are a fun way for your little learners to learn something new about school and feel ready to go when it’s their chance to try it out. :)

Happy learning! Cheering you on!
