St. Patrick's Day Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers

St. Patrick's Day Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Oh, what LUCK…St. Patrick’s Day is on the way! This is a such a fun holiday to celebrate and play with for little ones. Leprechauns, rainbows, and lucky clovers make for a lot of fun stories and books! So, I pulled together my current favorite St. Patrick’s Day books for toddlers and preschoolers, along with a few ideas for how to use each book to teach simple skills at home. Scroll to see which ones your little ones would love!

Also…SPOILER ALERT: I’ll give a quick synopsis of what each book is about. Just so I don’t spoil any part of the stories for you, you’ve been fairly warned. Haha! :)

Looking for some St. Patrick's Day books for kids this March? These ones are perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and other young learners this spring. Click the pin to check out the book titles, along with some ideas for fun related activities too.

1. The Itsy Bitsy Leprechaun

This little book has the cutest illustrations and goes along to the rhythm of “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” song. It takes the reader through things that the little leprechaun does in the springtime, from looking for gold to finding lucky clovers!

This is a great book to practice rhythm, rhyming, and learning about what leprechauns are and what they do! My little guy LOVES when my husband reads this book to a silly, off tune song instead of the real one. :) He keeps things fun around here! Haha!

2. Lucky Tucker

Oh, little Tucker! Tucker is a dog who wakes up and has terrible luck all morning. Then, he finds a way to change his luck and things start to go his way ALL DAY LONG. He enjoys things like dropped ice cream cones to free dog treats to a bath-free night at home!

This story is a great one to make connections to by remembering a time when things weren’t going the way you thought they would. The illustrations are really cute, but simple, making it perfect for little learners. This book is also PERFECT for retelling the beginning, middle, and end of the story, which is an essential skill for little ones!

3. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Curious George

My toddler is FINALLY into Curious George to this is a perfect book for this spring! The cute tabs on the outside of the book turn the pages to describe an important part of St. Patrick’s Day! The whole book is written in a poem form with lots of rhyming, so it’s great for practicing rhythm, rhyming, and learning about St. Pat’s Day.

Each page tells all about a different aspect of St. Patrick’s Day, like dancing, food, and other fun traditions like parades and hunting for gold. Even if your little one can’t follow the poem-like writing yet, you can have them tell you what’s happening in each picture on the pages and learn a lot about this fun spring holiday anyway! :)

4. The Secret Life of Leprechauns

This book is really simple, but it tells all about the secret things that leprechauns do and skills they have, even when we can’t see them! :) This is a really cute one for learning about these illusive little creatures we’re always trying to catch. Haha!

The illustrations are really simple, but they’re great for little ones and not overly complicated. Each page has minimal text on it, keeping it to ONE idea or thought for the most part. So, that makes it a great story for little ones since you can stop and talk about what they see in the picture and what all the words mean. It’s perfect for learning and discussing new vocabulary words too that young learners might not know yet.

5. The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day

The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day is a charming little book that follows a “Night Before Christmas” flow and tells all the things kids do the night before St. Patrick’s Day. It tells the story of two kids who are working super hard to figure out how to catch a leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day and shows them working through a bunch of ideas.

The illustrations are super cute and the rhyming nature of the writing is great for practicing phonics skills like letter sounds, rhyming, and ending sounds. It would also be a GREAT springboard for learners to create their own traps for leprechauns as a fun spring STEM activity!

6. Ten Lucky Leprechauns

This book is a cute story that goes through the day finding and counting 10 lucky leprechauns! The super bright, adorable illustrations are perfect for young learners. It’s poem-like structure gives plenty of opportunity to practicing identifying rhyming words, number sequence, and even sequence of events!

Oh, and if you need a fun little sensory bin to go along with this story, CLICK HERE to check out this number recognition and number order sensory bin to go along with the book!

7. The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day

This story is another rhyming book, all about a little leprechaun family! They’re off to a St. Patrick’s Day parade and the whole family has a part to play. The story describes what each family member is contributing to the parade and then how they get food ready for more leprechauns after the march.

Aside from the obvious rhyming word practice, this book is really great for some unique vocabulary words and as inspiration for story writing or picture drawing.

Hope you found a few new books for your little learners to learn about St. Patrick’s Day. Wishing you lots of happiness, luck, and rainbows this spring, friends!

Cheering you on!
